The hidden dangers of mould exposure and how to rid it from your system

Most people don’t think twice about mould - maybe you’ve seen a little patch on thebathroom ceiling or noticed a musty smell in the house. But what if mould was silentlymaking you sick?

For some, mould exposure is a hidden health hazard lurking behind walls, under
carpets, in air conditioning units, and even in the food we eat. The danger comes
from ‘mycotoxins’ - the almost indetectable compounds that get released into the air.
These particles get inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through our skin, quietly disrupting
our immune system, metabolism, gut health, and brain function.

Thankfully, not everyone reacts to mould exposure in this way. Around 25% of people
are genetically predisposed to mould-related illness, while others struggle due to a
weakened immune system or poor detoxification capacity, but some, are unharmed.

This is why two people can live in the same mouldy environment; one is completely
fine, while the other is plagued with chronic symptoms.

How Mould and Mycotoxins Impact the Body

Once inside, mycotoxins wreak havoc on multiple systems:

● Nervous system: Chronic fatigue, brain fog, emotional sensitivity, headaches,
inability to handle stress.

● Metabolic & Immune Dysfunction – Cravings, weight gain, recurring infections,
thrush, UTIs, hair loss, trouble regulating body temperature. allergies, sinusitis,
throat irritation, cough, shortness of breath, dizziness.

● Digestive issues – Bloating, IBS, constipation, diarrhoea, reflux, gas, food
sensitivities.

One of the biggest concerns is that mycotoxins settle in the intestines, where they
colonize, disrupt gut bacteria, weaken the gut lining, and create a cycle of
inflammation and toxin reabsorption. This is why many people continue to feel unwell
long after leaving a mouldy environment.

Eliminating Mould & Mycotoxins

Below is a simplified three-step process to educate, empower and start healing from
mould exposure. Just note, that while it’s a helpful foundation, it’s always best to work with
a practitioner who understands mould detoxification intricately.

STEP ONE: Remove Exposure

If you suspect mould has impacted your health, removing yourself from the source is
of utmost importance. Taking supplements while staying in a mouldy home is like
trying to bandage a bullet wound. Thankfully, half of people improve simply by
moving to a mould-free environment!
If relocating isn’t an option, you’ll need to deeply remediate and create a safe room
with proper air filtration and dehumidification. Once exposure is controlled,
detoxification can begin.

STEP TWO: Bind Toxins & Support Detoxification

Since mycotoxins are excreted through bile, they can recirculate in the intestines if not
properly bound and removed. Binders trap toxins and ensure they’re flushed out of
the body instead of being reabsorbed.
Effective Binders Include:

● Activated charcoal
● Zeolite
● Bentonite clay
● Chlorella
● Citrus pectin
● Saccharomyces Boulardii
● Liposomal glutathione
● N-Acetyl Cysteine

Supporting the body’s detox pathways is just as important as binding toxins. If detox
systems are sluggish, mycotoxins stay trapped, leading to persistent symptoms.

Detox Support

● Infrared saunas – these are one of the most effective ways to mobilize
mycotoxins stored in fat cells. Unlike traditional saunas, infrared heat
penetrates deep into tissues, promoting sweating at a cellular level.
● Support lymphatic flow – The lymphatic system is the garbage disposal
system of our body. Start dry skin brushing and engage in gentle movement.
● Hydrate – It’s important to support kidney function. Prioritize electrolytes and
adequate water.
● Optimise gut health – Prebiotics, probiotics, dietary fibre, herbal bitters, and
nutritional medicines like glutamine, aloe, and zinc help repair and protect the
gut lining.

STEP THREE: Herbal Antifungal & Antimicrobial Support

If mould has colonized your gut, sinuses, or lungs, antifungals are necessary. However,
they should only be introduced after mycotoxins have been removed and when the
digestive system is strong enough to handle them. Killing mould too soon can release
a flood of additional toxins, overwhelming the body.

Common Antifungal Herbs:
● Oregano oil
● Garlic
● Berberine
● Pau d’Arco
● Black walnut
● Pomegranate

Aim For A Healthy Home (or Office)

If we all become a bit more mindful of mould, we have a better chance of preventing
sickness. The best approach is creating a healthy home:

● Look - Check wardrobes, cupboards, bathrooms, floors, ceilings and around
your workspace. Any discolouration, stains (particularly in dark spaces), ripples,
or bubbles can be a sign of water damage and potential mould.
● Smell - A musty smell in your home, work or car could signify mould or
microbial growth. That said, not all types of moulds will produce an odour.
● Prioritise ventilation – Open windows or use fans daily, especially in rooms with
carpet. Exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens are key to preventing moisture
buildup.
● Let sunlight in – Sunlight naturally inhibits mould growth, so keep blinds and
curtains open.
● Manage humidity – Keep indoor humidity levels below 50% using dehumidifiers,
air conditioners, and moisture absorbers.
● Clean smart – Dust and wipe down areas regularly. If you see mould, pop on a
mask and clean it with vinegar and clove oil (not bleach which can encourage
further growth)
● Address leaks – Fix leaky plumbing, roofs and other building faults asap.
By taking small but proactive steps, you can reduce your risk of mould exposure and
create a home that supports your health.
